So we are a month into the new season, as yet I haven’t had the opportunity to head out with the cameras to capture any fieldsports photography. Fieldsports is something that has been a part of my upbringing since I was thirteen. A local gamekeeper gave me the opportunity to help out on his Suffolk estate. I used to spend every opportunity I could helping the gamekeeper on the estate, after school, weekends and school holidays. I even use to book time off work to help out.
From this, my passion and love for the countryside and its wildlife was born. It sounds ironic when you consider what fieldsports are about, but unless you have witnessed what proper balance there is within the countryside first hand you will never understand.
This is where I marry up my two passions perfectly. Personally I love Deer Stalking, especially in the highlands on the Blair Atholl Estate. There is something magical walking around Glen Tilt stalking these beasts. They still use the traditional garons. These are highland ponies used to extract the carcasses of the hill. And is an awesome spectacle to witness.
But ironically I am viewing them at home behind the camera screen rather than through the sight of a rifle or shotgun. Watching and photographing these magical moments in the field, either for clients who would like their special days captured or for editorial images for fieldsports and country magazines is where my true passion lies.
Being somebody who has spent so much time out in the field. Plus having the first-hand experience of the work that is involved. To bring the final result to the dinner table. Gives my clients the confidence that they will get exceptional images.
